Today we depart Toronto International airport to connect with our overnight flight to Milan aboard a wide-bodied jet. We enjoy dinner and breakfast while aloft.
Upon arrival in Milan, we are met by our Unitours Tour Manager and board our motor coach for the start of our pilgrimage. Depending on arrival time, we may stop for a quick lunch before the start of our journey. We visit the Duomo di Milano, one of the largest cathedrals in Italy and a gem of gothic architecture and magnificent stained-glass windows. While there we visit the crypt church and the tomb of St. Charles Borromeo, the first Archbishop of Milan and patron saint of seminarians and celebrate our first “pilgrims Mass” while there. We complete our day at our hotel, where we celebrate our “welcome dinner” and relax for the evening.
This morning, we visit the Santa Marie della Grazie, home of Leonardo di Vinci’s famous painting “The Last Supper.” Following Mass, we tour this magnificent church, as well as nearby Sforza Castle, a 15th century renaissance castle, which features numerous works of art and Michelangelo’s last work before his death. We then break for lunch on our own before we visit a hidden gem in Milan, the Church of St. Mary of the Fountain. Built in the early 16th century by the governor of Milan, Charles II d’Amboise. He had the church built to honor Mother Mary for a miraculous healing he received from the adjacent spring, which was incorporated into the design of the church. Though the exterior is rather nondescript, the interior is quite impressive. We conclude our day at the hotel with some time to relax before dinner and overnight there.
Today, we travel south to the beautiful city of Florence, stopping for lunch on our own along the way. We arrive and enjoy a tour of Florence with the Piazza della Signoria, dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio and its embattlement crowned tower. Across from the Palace, we visit the Loggia dei Lanzi with the statues of the Perseus by Cellini; Giambologna's the “Rape of the Sabines” and “Hercules.” We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
This morning, our first stop will be “Piazzale Michelangelo” for the best panoramic view of this spectacular city one could ask for. We proceed with a tour of the Academia Gallery, where we view one of Michelangelo’s most famous works, “David.” We continue with the celebration of Mass and a visit to the Duomo (also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore), in the heart of the city and the fourth largest in the world! There we admire the cupola by Brunelleschi, completed in 1240, its campanile by Giotto. Once outside we view the Baptistery’s with its incomparable bronze doors by Ghiberti. We break for a leisurely lunch on our own at one of the many trattorias that dot the riverfront area, along Florence’s Arno River. The rest of the day is free for personal shopping, browsing this fascinating city on our own. This evening, our dinner location will be one of the restaurants of this enchanting city. After our included dinner we return to our hotel for overnight.
Today, we journey west to the town of Pisa. On our scenic drive through this beautiful countryside, we continue through Tuscany and stop in the seaside town of Pisa to visit the Pisa Duomo (Cathedral) and celebrate Mass there. Built in 1118AD, it is truly an architectural gem to behold with its unique blend of styles, including some middle eastern influences. We also view the adjacent bell tower, popularly known to the secular world as the “leaning tower” of Pisa, but in truth designed and built as the bell tower for the Cathedral! Following a break for lunch on our own, we continue south along the coast, and travel to Piombino. Another stunning Italy seaside village, it is rich in history and culture. Founded as an Etruscan port, it has always “lived” in the shadow of the once mighty Pisa. We stop at the Chiesa della Misericordia, a wonderfully preserved church worth a visit! We check into our hotel and enjoy the sunset over the beaches nearby. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
This morning, we head south, through Italy’s wine region, and journey to Rome. We stop at a wonderful vineyard to taste wine and learn more about the importance of this region to the Italian culture. We break for lunch on our own along our route to Rome. We arrive in Rome and conclude our day at our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Today, we make our way to St. Peter's for an audience with Pope Francis if he is in residence. This afternoon, we enjoy a pasta making class and afterwards we enjoy the fruits of our labor. Overnight at our hotel.
This morning we travel to the Shrine in Isola del Gran Sasso, for Mass at Shrine of St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. We tour the historic monastery, which was originally built by St. Francis in 1215AD, but abandoned during the persecution of religious orders in the post Napoleonic era. The Passionists took it over and have maintained it ever since. With over two million visitors a year it ranks as one of the top fifteen sanctuary shrines in the Catholic world! We break for lunch on our own before returning to Rome. This evening, we enjoy dinner on our own at a popular Italian restaurant. Overnight at our hotel
Today, we travel to Pompeii, the Roman City destroyed yet preserved by the volcanic ash of Vesuvius in 79 AD. We visit the church of the Holy Rosary visited by Saint John Paul II shortly before his death. We celebrate Mass while there and enjoy free time for lunch and shopping before we continue our return trip to Rome for our “farewell dinner” and overnight at our hotel
This morning, we make our way home with memories of a lifetime.
