It is locally noted for the impressive statue of Pope St. John Paul II, who visited this Cathedral in 1997. Following our visit, we stop for lunch on our own at one of the many local cafés that dot the area. Following lunch, we briefly stop at Emperor’s Bridge, which crosses the Miljaka River, dividing the city in half. This bridge is the oldest in Sarajevo, ordered built by the founder of the city, Isa-Beg Ishaković, the 1st Ottoman governor. From this bridge, we have one of the best views in the city. We then conclude our day with a visit to the cliff-side “Yellow Fortress”, named after the unique stone material, used in its construction. Day 6 - SARAJEVO - This morning, we visit the impressive Church of the Holy Archangels Michael & Gabriel. Though rebuilt many times over the centuries, the foundations are believed to date back to sometime in the 500AD timeframe! Inside we find a magnificent collection of Orthodox/Byzantine icons dating back to the 13th century. The church also houses many important relics, including the hand of St. Thecla, one of the early martyrs and a follower of St. Paul. We stop for lunch on our own before our visit to the intriguing Cathedral of the Nativity, a baroque style Cathedral built for the Orthodox Serbians in the latter half of the 19th century. The Muslim presence was still very strong in the area as this was part of the Ottoman Empire. They protested vigorously to its construction, since it’s height and bell tower would surpass all existing mosques in Sarajevo at that time. Construction was done under guard of more than 1,000 troops and completed in 1872! Following our visit, we return to our hotel to relax before dinner and overnight. |
